By Edward Melville, The Alpha Company Having a good Clan, Guild, or Squad requires three things: - The Leader
- The Headquarters (Communications)
- And a Common (Realistic) Goal
The Leader Anyone will tell you that the leader is the most important part of a gaming team. People like to think they already know why... Heres why: In the end it only takes one person to kill a team. That's the leader. Once the leader loses interest his team, THEN the team dies. Many leaders 'give-up' because everyone in the team deserts the community. DON'T GIVE UP. IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. This must have happened to me 10 different times over 5 years. And it's even more common now during the "PC Gaming Slump." (Temporary Slump) Leaders are the ones with the supreme vision, which also makes them the lone dogs. If you are a leader, be prepared to be alone in your goals. Martin Luther King was at first....
The Headquarters I say Headquarters but what I mean is "The Method the Team has of Communicating." I believe that every team should have these three basic ways of communicating: - A Website
- A Voice Server
- And a Gaming Server
Each one depends on the other in some way or fashion. Without a Gaming Server, the only thing your team can do is talk on the voice server. Without a voice server, the only thing your team can do is talk on the website. (Which isn't a very dependable way of communicating). Without a website, what is your team? Where is your mark on the web? A gaming server is more than just a place to play, it is your Headquarters in game. Your 'Mark' in the virtual world for the game you play. This is essential, I've never seen a team 'get by' without one.
A Common Yet Realistic Goal Why are we here? That is the question a team leader should already have. The worst a team leader can say is, "To be number one in the world." That's unrealistic, theres no such thing (yet) as the 'number one team in the world'. That kind of fame is temporary in most sports, it's even more non-existent in the gaming world. A better way to say this: "To be in the top 10 in (Insert Ladder Name Here)" That goal is realistic, it's attainable, and everyone can imagine getting that goal. If you're a leader, ask yourself, 'What is the current goal for our team? And does our goal seem attainable to my members?'
In a nutshell - Setup your Virtual Headquarters for Effective Communication
- Set a Common and Attainable Goal for your Team
Then Deal with Getting New Members
